Chapter 3 Blog
Has Canada Got the Cure?
http://www.yesmagazine.org/

This article compares the United States' health care program and Canada's public tax supported health care. It states that the US is the only country in the developed world that doesn't have public payed health care. Furthermore, the US has the most expensive health care in the world with one of the most unhealthiest population. Theres a great difference between how long people live in Canada and how long people live in the US mainly because of the expensive health care. Because the health care in the US is so expensive, many of the poor people can not afford the health care program leading to poorer public health. The US spends the most capita on health in the world and if they switched to a system like Canada's they would save over $161 billion every year. However, this money comes from the people who are sick and not the government.

I am pretty glad that we have a good health care system in Canada even though if some of us pays for something we do not need, it is better for everyone esle in the country. If we do change it, our death rates might increase to the United States' level. I think that private health care would not work as well for the country because some people can not afford it. It may seem better if we payed our own health care without tax but the poor people who can not afford it might not be able to get health care.

This article links to chapter 3 because it compares the US private health care and Canada's public taxed health care. There are many differences between these two health care systems
and some similarities also.

Do we really have a good healthcare system in Canada? Yes, Canada boasts public healthcare that is accessible by every one of different financial backgrounds but this arouses problems as it is flawed. Waiting times for much needed surgeries have been increasing steadily over the past few years and because everyone is equal, people do not have higher priority for medical attention even if you have the money. There is an increasing number of people who decided to pay an extra few hundred dollars to go to the United States where there IS privately owned hospitals for medical attention. The Canadian government should allow private sectors to set up private hospitals because they have the potential to provide a better service and reduce waiting times. However, the government should not completely eliminate public healthcare, as it is important that it co-exists with private healthcare. This case can be compared to public education and private education. They both co-exists – the wealthier pay for private school, while the people who can’t afford can still resort to public school which, is not necessarily a bad thing. Yes government should regulate healthcare due to third-party effects whereas the benefits of a healthier population has obvious positive effects to the country and economy (less people dying, more people consuming products, no diseases to be spread) but they should also allow hospitals to be privatized as well because it is beneficial.
So do we have a good healthcare system? Or can we make modifications to it that will benefit us even more. We need not be like United States where ALL hospitals are privatized, but just like how private and public education co-exists, why can't healthcare?

I agree with you when you say that you’re glad we have Canada’s health care system, rather than a privately owned health care system. Many people have to pay for services they may not need yet, but many others who can not afford to pay medical expenses on their own would be helped out a lot. You mentioned that because of our current health care system the rates of death in Canada are much lower than the rates in the US. This reassures me that Canada really is better off because, who wouldn’t want to lead a longer healthier life?
